Thank you, Wayne Hoffman for an excellent article (March 8) on earmarks. The Western Elmore County Recreation District did not know until reading your article that we had been awarded $285,000 to build our Recreation Center.

With this earmark and the tax dollars saved, the WECRD is very close to having the amount needed to build a debt free facility that will provide a much needed recreation and aquatic health facility for our 25,000+ youth, adults, and senior citizens in Elmore County and surrounding communities of Bruneau, Grandview, and Fairfield. There are no recreation centers in these communities.

An earmark is not a bad thing. The federal government does a service when helping non-profit organizations such as the WECRD provide a facility that will enhance the lives of so many who do not have the same opportunities that are available in a more populated area such as Boise or Nampa. We applaud the hard work of Congressman Simpson, Sen. Larry Craig, and Sen. Mike Crapo. The WECRD thanks them for continuing to believe in the mission of creating a healthy, safe environment for children and adults to recreate, relax, and rehabilitate.
