Long time residents of Western Elmore County know the benefits of a recreational facility and have worked long and hard to bring such a facility to Mountain Home. Their voice and opinion can be viewed here:

When the WECRD Community Center opens its doors, what will you use it for?

February 11, 2009

"I’ll go there for strength training and cardio workouts. Also, it will be a very pleasant social gathering place. Way back when, I used to belong to What-A-Racquet when it was here and I miss having a facility like it in our town. I met a lot of friends for life there." - Tom Horgan

"I will swim laps four or five days a week. I have been waiting for a covered pool for over thirty-five years…it can’t happen soon enough for me." - Janet Horgan

“I would love a recreation center for here – we need it. I remember working out at What-a-Racquet almost 20 years ago and how much fun I had taking Monica Wither’s aerobic classes and making friends. I would use this center for weight training, yoga, and pilates classes. Something I really got into at the last health club I was at was spinning classes. I hope they offer that here. I almost forgot – I would use the walking track and cardio equipment.” - Beth Reed

“I would use the indoor swimming pool. My grandkids would use the craft-room with lessons, climbing wall, computer room if they will have these things. We’d all like to see performing artists if they will have that there. I’d also like a hot tub. They really need more things for the kids to do so they stay out of trouble. Mountain Home is a great place to raise kids but lacks activities for them.” - Linda Johnson

“My kid and I would use the indoor pool. We would use the game room or inside play area if they have this. A snack bar for kids would be great. It would be great if they have performing arts to attend. And the indoor walking track.” - Robin Lekvold

“We need this center to be for everyone in the community – not just the kids. I would mainly use the weight room and the cardio area. If this center doesn’t have a good weight room I wouldn’t join. I also would take the yoga and pilates classes if offered as I have back problems and these exercises would help with that. The classes would have to be offered in the evening so working people like myself could attend.” - Ken Reed

“I want a place to work out and meet new people. I’d use the game room, and maybe the weight room and swimming pool, depending on how perky I feel. I ‘m hoping I could meet some fine ladies there too!” - Marshall Reed

“I would use the pools, and indoor running track. I would also take yoga and pilates classes and use the weight room. Pretty much I would use it all." - Julie Raub

“ I would use the whole center. My big interest is racquet ball but also the pool. The social benefit will also be great” - Joan Mullins

“I have grandchildren and great-grandchildren who would use this incessantly. It is a very needed thing for the kids here.” - Bev Lucia

“I would use the indoor walking track, yoga classes, racquetball court. Let’s make it happen, baby!” - Glen Tulloch

“This center will be used by all my family for recreation. A therapy pool is very important to us as we do have family members with physical disabilities. The social aspect of it will be really great. Older folks (like myself) really need this. So do people with differences in physical and developmental potential. We need this center as a way to meet, have fun, do our therapies – it will be great for the whole community. The tax question is out there; we pay taxes for the golf course to bring in outside revenue. The community center will do the same thing so what is the big deal! Let’s go forward for the good of everyone.” - Ann Bush

“I am a senior citizen who is trying to stay in the best health and shape that I possibly can to live out a full life. I would use the center for water aerobics, exercising and weight lifting. If any other programs or activities were offered that interested me, I would take them also. I feel the center is necessary for the entire community, both young and old. I work part time, but would also be interested in volunteering at the center.” Jackie Birkett

“I’ll be checking out the weight room and cardio area mainly. It’d be nice if they had a game room too.” - David Larsen

“A safe and reliable place for locals to obtain better health. I believe a place for the family to gather has its benefits over 'private gyms". - Kim Heinen

“We have four children and all four would appreciate somewhere safe to keep busy! Out whole family is active and when we moved to Mtn Home we were sad to find no YMCS's or rec centers. Between the six of us we'd keep the rec center open! - Mary Powell

Western Elmore County needs a recreation center because…..

"My twins and I would love this recreation center because it would be somewhere for us all to go together. While I am working out in the weight room or doing a cardio machine, my kids could be in the activity or game room interacting with other kids and making friends. This would be so much better for my kids than staying home at night or after school and watching tv, which is what they do now. I need a place where they can go and be safe and have adult supervision. And for me, it would be a great social outlet and way to meet other people instead of going to the bars." - Lori

“I would like the indoor walking track to keep in shape and also a weight room and a therapy pool. Other people need this as well as me.” - Harris Allgood

“I would most certainly use the swimming pool as this is the only exercise my polio doctor recommends for me. I constantly meet people who claim they want the community center with a swimming pool. There are a lot of people out there who want this as much as I do but do not get actively involved in making this happen. It will certainly benefit our whole community from the very young to the very old. I should be able to use a few of the machines especially the rotary machine (for the waist region). I am hopeful and looking forward to this facility and what pride the community will have once it is built.” Joyce Allgood

Given the long bouts of cold and windy weather in Idaho, we NEED indoor activities to keep Mtn Home youth and adults active and healthy. Organized and supervised activities with kids (i.e. karate, dance, tumbling, etc) could allow parents the opportunity to work out and exercise while their kids are doing their activities. The base has some opportunities but it is too far for convenience and not available to most Mtn Home residents. Some other businesses in town seem to run as a monopoly, so I choose not to support them. I know many parents in Mtn Home who commute their kids to Boise for recreational activity. A local rec center would allow that commerce (money!) to stay in Mtn Home! I would love to see Sue Basabe (owner of Fitness First) receive a contract at the proposed rec center. She is THE BEST in town and an original pillar of fitness in Mtn Home. She deserves to be part of such a progressive move towards making Mtn Home a healthier place to live.” Jennifer Hertimeyer
